Mass. Tax Free Weekend 2014: Officially Set for August 16 & 17

Mass. Tax Free Weekend 2014: Officially Set for August 16 & 17

After months of uncertainty, Massachusetts shoppers can finally make back-to-school shopping plans to take advantage of the state’s tenth sales tax holiday scheduled for this weekend, August 16th and 17th.

Shoppers will not have to pay the 6.25% state sales tax on single items of tangible personal property costing $2,500 or less.

Excluded from the sales tax holiday are motor vehicles, motorboats, meals and certain tobacco products.

At the State House in Boston Wednesday afternoon, Governor Deval Patrick finally signed a bill that turns the annual sales tax holiday into law.

Since June, the dates for this year’s tax free weekend in Massachusetts were up in the air as state legislators couldn’t agree on a date. It took an eleventh hour compromise in committee to get a date before the Governor.

Massachusetts shoppers shouldn’t expect a permanent, annually-recurring tax free weekend from this last-minute law – the state legislature must repeat the entire process again next year.
