Amazon’s Kindle Fire will be getting an update within the next two weeks, according to an e-mail sent out by Amazon.
Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire to the world in September 28 and launched it into consumers hands on November 14. Since then sales have been meteoric. The Kindle Fire is expected to be the number two best-selling tablet this holiday season, behind the Apple iPad. Some analysts are predicting that Amazon will sell 5 million of the 7 inch tablets this quarter.
But there is trouble in paradise. A growing number of critics are complaining about something that our regular readers here it NFS are well aware of. The Kindle Fire is not designed to be a full-on super tablet. It’s no iPad. It’s not supposed to be. It’s designed to be a way to access Amazon’s entertainment content. Books, music, movies and shopping from Amazon. It gives a nod to being a tablet by providing access to apps. But only Amazon approved ones. It can be used for e-mail. But primarily it’s a front door to Amazon. And not a particularly big or strong one at that.
But many Kindle Fire buyers gobbled up the overblown media hype and expected more. On the Amazon’s website, while many buyers report complete satisfaction, others are complaining about the Kindle Fire’s shortcomings. The dissatisfaction is showing up in Amazon’s customer review score for the Kindle Fire. The Fire rates 3.8 stars out of a possible 5.
Amazon will be responding to some of the criticisms and complaints through a new software update. The update is expected to be pushed out within the next two weeks.
In an e-mail sent to and published by AFP, Amazon said the Fire was the most successful product they had ever launched, and they continue to make all their products better with regular software updates. “In fact, in less than two weeks, we’re rolling out an over-the-air update to Kindle Fire that will improve performance, touch navigation, and give customers the option to choose what items display on the carousel,” read the e-mail.
NFS will follow up on this story as the update is released, and report on the issues it addresses.
