Kidde Recalls Over 5 Million NightHawk Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Kidde has recalled over 5 million NightHawk combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms due to alarm failure.

The problem results from the alarms failing to continue chirping when they’ve reached the end of their seven-year life when new batteries are put in. This falsely leads homeowners to believe the alarm is still working and could result in not being alerted to the presence of a fire or carbon monoxide in the home.

Kidde NightHawk alarms with the model number KN-COSM-IB and manufacture dates between June 1, 2004 and December 31, 2010 are impacted by the recall. (Both the model number and manufacture date can be located on printed labels on the back of the alarm.)

The NightHawk alarms are the type that are hard-wired into a home’s electric power and there’s a compartment on the back that takes a 9V battery for backup. They are round, white alarms that measure between 5 and 6 inches around with “Kidde” engraved on the front.

Over 3.5 million of the units were sold in the U.S. with an additional 1.5 million sold in Canada. The recalled alarms were sold at home centers, electrical distributors and through Amazon.com. Dates sold range from June 2004 through December 2010. The alarms retailed for between $40 to $65.

The company has received eight reports of incidents with the alarms and none with injuries.

Kidde will be offering replacement alarms or a discount on a new alarm, depending on the manufacture date of the original alarm.

Customers who own the recalled Kidde NightHawk combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms are advised to stop using them immediately and to contact Kidde toll-free at 855-239-0490. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Or go online to kidde.com and follow the link for Product Safety Notice.
