Update: Jessica Alba has responded to complaints via Instagram and the company’s website, saying in part that: “For those who have expressed concerns about our Sunscreen Lotion, we want you to know that we hear you and we’re here for you. As always, we’ll do what it takes to make it right.” You can read the full statement here
The Honest Company, co-founded by actress Jessica Alba, has consumers seeing red- literally, as many are complaining of serious sunburn after using their all-natural sunscreen.
Several news outlets, including the Times and NBC’s Today Show, are reporting that irate shoppers and parents are posting pictures on social media showing some nasty burns after using the product as directed.
They are also lodging complaints on sites like Amazon, where close to 60% of those who bought the lotion gave it 1 out of 5 stars in their review.
The Honest Company is known for their eco-friendly products, including the sunscreen in question: The Honest Company’s Sunscreen lotion, which has an SPF of 30 and claims to have broad spectrum coverage.
However, the company recently lowered the Zinc Oxide in the lotion to 9%- most sunscreens have 1o-20% zinc oxide according to experts interviewed on the subject.
Other ingredients were added to compensate, but many feel it isn’t working based on the images and complaints.
Speaking to the Today show, the company said its product is tested by an independent 3rd party and that: ” “the number of complaints received on our own website about our Sunscreen Lotion constitute less than one half of one percent of all units actually sold at Honest.com. We stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product.”
You can see some of the pictures being posted here as well as the many reviews from Amazon.
