Is Tilapia Real? You Betcha! Scrod? Yeh, It’s Real Too!

On tonight’s O’Reilly Factor, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said there is no fish called Tilapia.

He said the same thing about Scrod.

In his Tip of the Day segment, O’Reilly described both Tilapia and Scrod as a mixture of fish. He made it sound as though they were like a fish ‘burger’ or ‘patty’ of sorts.

His statements are likely to confuse thousands of Tilapia and Scrod shoppers, not to mention those who purchase Tilapia and Scrod in restaurants.

Actually, according to Wikipedia, Tilapia is the common name for “nearly 100 species of cichlid fish from the tilapiine cichlid tribe.”

The article on Wikipedia goes on to mention that “Tilapia were one of the three main types of fish caught in Biblical times from the Sea of Galilee.”

Wikipedia describes Scrod as “originally any young (2.5 lb or 1.1 kg or less) cod, haddock, or other whitefish, split and boned. Most typically young cod is the modern mainstay on menus calling for Scrod.”

O’Reilly also said that one cannot go fishing for Tilapia or Scrod.

Apparently whoever gave him that information, was wrong. Tilapia can be fished for, as can Scrod. It’s just that the name Tilapia or Scrod is not a distinct name for a specific fish, but a group of fish.

O’Reilly would have been better off describing Talipia not as a mixture of fish, but by saying it could be one of many fish. Just as one says snapper, though there are many different types of snapper.

What did you think of tonight’s O’Reilly Talipia/Scrod goof?
