Is Dr. Oz A Fraud? New Controversy Has Doctors Calling For His Dismissal

Dr. Oz may be loved by millions of people, but many of his fellow doctors have a different opinion. according to published reports in several papers.

The Times, Daily News, Fox, and other  news outlets are reporting that 10 prestigious physicians have written a blistering letter to Dr. Oz’s boss at the Columbia University Department of Surgery calling for his immediate dismissal.

Among those who have signed the letter ar Dr. Gilbert Ross, executive director of the American Counsel on Science and Health and Dr. Henry Miller of Stanford.

The letter calls into question Dr. Oz’s medical ethics, citing his endorsement of “magical mystery cures” and supplements that are not regulated to promote his celebrity, as proof of his fraudulent behavior.

Throughout the letter Dr. Oz’s actions are questioned and scrutinized, charging that  he is: “..guilty of either outrageous conflicts of interest or flawed judgments about what constitutes appropriate medical treatments, or both.”

The letter concludes by saying: “Whatever the nature of his pathology, members of the public are being misled and endangered, which makes Dr. Oz’s presence on the faculty of a prestigious medical institution unacceptable.”

Dr. Miller, who was the first to sign the petition, is quite vocal in the NY Daily News,  calling Dr. Oz a “quack” and a “charlatan” and accusing Columbia of not  dismissing the doctor because of his celebrity status.

This is not the first time Dr. Oz, who rose to fame in great part due to Oprah, has come under fire for questionable ethics..

In 2014 he was lambasted by a Senate panel in Washington for endorsing “miracle” weight loss products that were proven not to work-which strengthens what these doctors are saying.

Dr. Oz was a well-known cardiothoracic surgeon prior to becoming famous and has been on staff at Columbia since 1993.

Dr. Oz has not commented, but Columbia did, saying in the NY Daily News article that: “Columbia is committed to the principle of academic freedom and to upholding faculty members’ freedom of expression for statements they make in public discussions.”
