GM Recalls Almost 800,000 Vehicles Due To Dangerous Defect- What You Need To Know

General Motors (GM) has issued a recall on about 780,000 vehicles due to a dangerous defect involving the the rear lift-gates- which can fall without warning according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall is on cars made between 2007 and 2012: around 680,000 of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S. and another 94,000 outside the country (including Mexico and Canada).

The affected models are as follows: 2008-2012 model-year Buick Enclaves and GMC Acadias, 2009-2012 model-year Chevrolet Traverses and 2007-2010 model-year Saturn Outlooks.

According to the NHTSA website, the rear lift-gates are supported by gas struts, which can prematurely wear, causing the lift-gate to fall.

The defect has not caused any crashes or deaths, but GM is reporting at least 56 injuries that resulted from the defect.

GM is in the process of notifying owners about the recall and dealers are updating the software for the power lift-gate actuator motor control unit, which will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge.

GM has not given a time frame for notifying car owners, so those with concerns and questions can contact the following places:

·National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

·Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300.

·Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

·GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.

·Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000.

GM’s number for this recall is 15240.

Consumers can also go to www.safecar.gov to look up their car by VIN number to see if it is a part of the recall- but please note that it can take time for a car’s VIN number to make the list so check back every few days.
