I’ve had this easy solution to fixing a plugged up toilet work for me several times.
Add a squirt of dish soap to the toilet water, let sit and allow the water level to go down.
Fill a bucket with hot water – or better yet, if you have a shower head with a hose and it reaches, warm the water up first, then use it to add hot water to toilet.
Be careful not to overfill, let sit for ten minutes or so, then flush (be prepared to shut things off if it doesn’t work). Repeat if not successful the first time. Don’t use boiling or close to boiling water. You can crack the ceramic if it’s too hot!
If it it totally jammed, this may not work, but it’s done the trick for me when it’s draining slow –
I’ve done this many times over the years, just never with the dish soap. What is the soap supposed to do?
I think it’s just supposed to make things a bit more slippery and perhaps break up and dislodge things – but I’ve done it without soap as well and it seems to work too :)
