“Forrest Gump” Returning to Theaters in IMAX

Forrest Gump will return to theaters for a one-week engagement — and it will now be in IMAX format.

The IMAX corporation, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment made the announcement this week that Forrest Gump will be receiving a one-week theatrical re-release starting September 5 to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It is being digitally remastered for the  IMAX format, which is known for screens that are often several stories high. The company’s technology will make sure the movie has the crystal-clear images and dynamic sound that audiences have come to expect from IMAX releases.

“As a groundbreaking achievement in both cinematography and visual effects for its time, Forrest Gump has become a modern American movie classic,” Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster said in a statement issued to the press. “We are thrilled to once again collaborate with our longtime friends and partners, [director] Bob Zemeckis, [star] Tom Hanks, and Paramount. This film deserves a platform like the IMAX Experience to help make its 20th anniversary one to remember.”

Additionally, on September 30, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release a special “Diamond Deluxe” anniversary Blu-Ray, with new collector’s packaging and a “state-of-the-art sophisticated design.”

Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks as a man with a low IQ who nonetheless becomes witness to many of the most important historical events of the 20th century. It was a box office smash, earning nearly $330 million in the U.S. alone, and more than $675 million worldwide.

It was also an awards magnet, earning Tom Hanks his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar. Forrest Gump additionally won the Best Picture Oscar for 1994, beating out Quentin Tarantino’s groundbreaking Pulp Fiction, a victory that continues to be controversial among hardcore film buffs.
