It may not feel like spring in most of the country, but flowers are blooming  at Macy’s ART of BLOOM Spring 2015 Flower Show!

In the NYC flagship store, an unclad Roman statue graces one of its entrances. Theatrical lights of flowers are projected onto the white plaster figure. The statue stands in a garden of orchids, kalanchoes, and a palette of other flowers.

Flowers and arrangements galore fill the first floor and mezzanine along the corridors, by the staircases, in pots, and hanging above the counters. In the windows along Broadway (the stage for the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade), are displays with the theme of empowering women. One of the displays looks like an impressionist Monet whose images and props are “painted” with flowers, just like the Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA, in January.

On the show’s opening day, Sunday, March 22, the store was packed with locals, tourists, and some photographers with serious cameras and tripods. Despite the many visitors, I still enjoyed a stroll and visit to the FREE show with a girlfriend. We sipped some FREE and complementary seltzer, lemonade, and orange drinks, along with quarter-size sandwiches as b. michael unveiled his new collection of spring hats and dresses, as the pencil-thin models strutted along the corridors. We missed Martha Stewart at 12 noon.

There are different seminars on cooking, flower arranging, and more, held each day. If you would like to check out a seminar, it would be best to look at the schedule of events in Macys’ website, and go to the show prepared. The Herald Square store in NYC is open until 9:30 PM every day, except Sunday, when it closes earlier at 8:30 PM.

On the mezzanine is an exhibit of a Yunnan, China garden with a mannequin in Yunnan colorful clothing. In another case, is a beautiful open-shoulder red cocktail dress crafted out of Chinese Lucky Red Envelopes (lai see, hong bao) in the Chinese traditional festive colors of red and gold! Festive lanterns in the same colors hang by the mannequin as if she was in a Chinese Wedding.

The 41st annual Macy’s Flower show is weeklong, ending on Saturday, April 4, 2015. It is ongoing this week in NYC, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Minneapolis and San Francisco.

For the Macy’s Flower Show gift shop in Herald Square, go to the farthest closed-in corner of the fine-jewelry department off the ground floor. T-shirts and tote bags are about $29 a piece. The store has a McDonald’s on the 6th floor, a salad bar on the 4th floor where one can buy a make-your-own salad for $6.99. Meat is extra. With chicken cutlet, the salad came to under $11 with the tax. Restrooms are next to this cafeteria-style eatery

On the 8th floor is the store’s gift shop, where you can pick up Macys tote bags, and other items with the Macys logo. Adjacent to the shop is a sit-down restaurant. “The Cellar” has been moved to the top and 8th floor while the basement is under renovation.

The Macy’s Art in Bloom 2015 Flower Show is a destination in itself. There is so much ART in BLOOM, and seminars to take in, that I could definitely take in a little more over several visits. Few things are FREE, and in expensive NYC, the show is completely FREE.

Will you be strolling in Macys’ flower show with a friend or family? What interesting artistic expressions of flowers did you see?
