Renowned radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has opted to not renew her contract after this year, amid an outcry over last week’s controversial radio call.
In the call last week, an African-American caller sought advice for her personal situation. Her white husband’s family was making racist remarks and she didn’t know how to deal with it. During the conversation, Schlessinger used the N-word multiple times. In a five minute time span the radio host said the word eleven times. This sparked huge controversy and an outcry from the public.
Schlessinger did apologize the day after, but stuck to the fact that she was attempting to make a point, however wrong her way of doing it might have been. She said she adamantly regrets her choices that day.
However, the talk show host said she feels that she can no longer speak freely. She believes the anger, and the calls from several groups to boycott her show, have gone too far. She states that she just wants to speak what she feels may help, and say what is on her mind and in her heart. At this point she believes she no longer has freedom of speech.
Though she is leaving the radio show, she clearly stated that she is not leaving the public arena. She will simply be focusing on avenues that will allow her to speak without fear.
“I will be stronger and freer to say my mind through my books, my YouTube channel, my blog and my website. and I’ll be on tv more, because I’ll have the freedom to speak my mind.” she said on ‘Larry King Live’ Tuesday night.
“The Dr. Laura show is syndicated and has a worldwide audience of over 9 million. It has been reported that General Motors and Motel 6 pulled their advertising support from the show prior to Schlessinger’s announcement.
