Diverticulitis Downs UFC Champ Brock Lesnar – “I’m Not Retiring”

Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has been knocked out of his fight against  Junior dos Santos, which was scheduled for June 11th, due to diverticulitis. UFC fans may recall that Lesnar has dealt with diverticulitis before. In 2009, he had to withdraw from a heavyweight title defense against Shane Carwin.

Diverticulitis is a condition related to the digestive track. It comes from diverticulosis, the formation of pouches (diverticula) along the outside of the colon. When those pouches become inflamed, it is called diverticulitis.

Lesnar said he has been dealing with this most recent bout for about three months. He reported that he has pain in the abdomen and is tired to the point that it is difficult to train. When symptoms began, his treatment involved a course of antibiotics. When that failed to ease the symptoms, he met with doctors and afterwards, decided to pull out of the fight.

“It didn’t allow me to train to my full capabilities. I was forced to make a decision to go back down to the doctor this week to figure out how far this thing is along. What it does is it drains my entire body down. Basically, you’ve got an infection in your stomach and all my resources went to fight this problem instead of rebuilding what I tore down in the gym,” Lesner said after the decision.

Lesner made apologies to dos Santos and the UFC for pulling out of the fight. He said that he is considering the option of surgery, and stated that “I will tell you one thing, I’m not retiring.”
