Can a German take on a British classic car be built by Italians?

BMW thinks so.

Mini released photos of their concept Mini Superleggera this month.

The Mini Superleggera is the result of a collaboration between Mini and the Italian coach works company Touring Superleggera.Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design on the concept: “Touring Superleggera and MINI have much in common: both companies attach great importance to their history and this is something which defines their outward appearance to this day.”

This was no small undertaking. The Classic Mini originally built in England has a 55 year history. In order to emulate its ancestor, the Superleggera was designed with minimalism, just the bits you need to drive and enjoy, no more no less.

To enhance the look and driving feel, the passenger compartment has been moved back. This results in a longer hood and long wheelbase which echoes the outline of the proper British roadster.

To maintain the connection with modern Mini’s, the concept incorporates the circular headlight and hexagonal grill most will recognize from Mini’s around town.

The Superleggera will be Electric. The only visual give away, however, is the closed off grill.

The interior follows the exteriors minimalistic ideals. A shoulder line in polished aluminium visually separates the exterior and interior from each other. The brown leather and aluminum used inside the car remain untreated( no paint, no dye), to further enhance the aesthetic simplicity.

Touting Superleggera has been in operation since 1926. With their reputation for style and hand built quality, the Mini Superleggera promises to be a unique modern classic.

So, do you think the German based British make designed by an Italian coach builder can succeed?
