Chrysler, Nissan, GM Most Hackable Cars?

Chrysler, Nissan, GM Most Hackable Cars?

A pair of cyber security experts have outed the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 and the 2015 Cadillac Escalade by claiming they are the “most hackable” cars on the market.

Computer security researches Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek discussed their report on the most hackable models at the Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, August 2-7, 2014.

Thousands attended the conference to learn about security threats with a focus on the safety of vehicles, medical devices and other equipment with embedded computers.

Naturally, the three automakers are trying to distance themselves from these claims, but are taking them serious and vow to fix any issues before they become a problem.

Surprisingly, one of Chrysler’s vehicles was also placed at the other end of the list. The 2014 Dodge Viper was named along with the 2014 Audi A8 and the 2014 Honda Accord as three of the “least hackable.”

It needs to be noted that the findings of this report are still theoretical at this point, and Miller and Valasek have cautioned as such.

They did not test the vehicles themselves but assessed key criteria that could allow hackers entry, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

They say in the report, “This doesn’t mean that the most susceptible looking isn’t in fact quite secure (i.e. coded very securely) or that the most secure looking isn’t in fact trivially exploitable. But it does provide some objective measure of the security of a large number of vehicles that wouldn’t be possible to examine in detail without a massive effort.”

How do you feel about this report? Are you concerned about the security of your car?
