Blue Bell Issues Recall Due To Listeria Contamination

Blue Bell, one of the largest ice cream makers in the nation, has announced that it is issuing a voluntary recall of two of its flavors due to possible Listeria contamination.

The recall includes half-gallon and pint-sized containers of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookie Two Step flavored ice cream.

According to Blue Bell, the potential problem has been traced to a third-party supplier, Aspen Hills. Although no illnesses have been reported, and their “products in the marketplace have passed our test and hold program, which requires that finished product samples test negative for Listeria monocytogenes,” they are issuing the recall out of “an abundance of caution.”

Last year, widespread Listeria contamination caused Blue Bell to issue massive recalls and lay off hundreds of workers. Listeria can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, and other complications. It can also cause severe and even fatal infections among children, the elderly, and sick individuals. It can also bring about miscarriages if consumed by pregnant women.

The affected products were distributed in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The code dates included in the recall are as follows:

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Half Gallons: 082618226
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pints: 081518242 and 082418242
Cookie Two Step Half Gallons: 080418222 and 081818224

Code dates can be found on the bottom of the cartons. If you purchased an affected product, you can return it to the place of purchase for a refund. You can also call Blue Bell at 979-836-7977 on weekdays between 8-5 CT. In any case, the products should not be consumed.
