Barnes & Noble Offers 50% Off Criterion DVDs and Blu-Rays

Barnes & Noble’s biannual Criterion Collection sale is currently underway. All Criterion DVDs and Blu-Rays are 50% off their regular retail price. Sale prices are valid in stores and on their website through December 1.

This is always an exciting event for film buffs, who treasure the company’s well-regarded special editions. Criterion’s mission is to release “a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films,” and to “publish them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements.”

Criterion is known not only for having discs with exemplary picture quality, but also for the high caliber of the bonus materials they offer. Supplements are designed to help the viewer obtain a deeper, richer appreciation for the feature film.

Among recent Criterion releases, all of which are included in the sale, are Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz, David Lynch’s Eraserhead, John Ford’s My Darling Clementine, Robert Altman’s Nashville, Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill, and David Cronenberg’s Scanners.

Directors with multiple titles in the Criterion Collection include Charlie Chaplin (Modern Times, The Gold Rush, The Great Dictator, City Lights), Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Life Aquatic), Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Night on Earth, Mystery Train), and Alfred Hitchcock (Foreign Correspondent, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Notorious, Rebecca, Spellbound).

These examples only scratch the surface of what Criterion offers. Their releases are diverse, so anyone can find something that will be appealing. If you love movies, or want to learn more about them, the Barnes & Noble 50% off sale offers a great opportunity to add some remarkable titles to your film library.
