Anne Hathaway will be playing Catwoman in the upcoming installment of Christopher Nolan’s popular Batman series, “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will star opposite Christian Bale.
Warner Bros. announced the casting choice on Wednesday morning, and they announced as well the character that Tom Hardy will be playing: Bane.
Nolan told press : “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
Harding worked previously with Nolan in the 2010 blockbuster “Inception.”
Hathaway beat out stiff competition in the screen tests for the coveted role, including Keira Knightley and Jessica Biel. In the announcement by Warner Bros., the character was announced as Selina Kyle, not Catwoman, which follows Nolan’s down-to-earth approach to the dark superhero.
Hathaway is among many actresses, including Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, who have portrayed the sensuous and repressed heroine on screen. Most of Nolan’s characters have been toned down and given darker undertones, a far cry from the over-the-top comic book style of earlier movies.
Actors Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine will be reprising their roles in the third Batman movie by Nolan, who also directed “Batman Begins” and the critically acclaimed “The Dark Knight.”
