Airbag Recall: Car Owners Can’t Get Replacements- What To Do|Total Numbers Still Not Known

News about the Takata airbag recall continues to come in and each new report seems to be worse than the last.

The latest reports indicate that car owners are struggling to get replacement bags and car companies are still trying to figure out all the cars that are affected.

According to several reports, including one from ABC News, car owners are  are being told it could take months to get a replacement airbag, making an already tense situation worse.

Since there are so many recalled cars many dealers do not have enough replacements for everyone, leaving many drivers stuck driving with a hazardous airbag in their car.

Some dealers are offering loaner cars to drivers in the mean time, but by law they are not required to, leaving car owners with few options.

Owners are reporting that some dealers are disconnecting the defective airbags, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says disabling the airbags is just as dangerous (and against the law) and advises not to do that.

If you are having a problem getting a replacement your best bet is to go to your dealer and try to get them to lend you a car; you should also file a complaint with Takata.

If that weren’t bad enough, it is also being reported that it could take Takata up to 2 years to fully fix the problem and months for car makers to find out and report all the affected cars.

Mark Rosekind, Administrator for the  NHTSA said recently that: ” At this point, I believe if anybody gave you a number, they don’t know what they’re talking about.” when asked about the total number of cars affected.

As of now, anyone who fears their car may be affected can go to the specially made Takata Recall Website and enter their car’s VIN (vehichle identification number) to check.

Your car’s VIN can be found on your registration or a plate visible on the windshield of the car.

You should also check back every few weeks, as the list continues to grow and be updated.

This recall is one of the biggest consumer product recalls ever and the biggest auto recall to date.
