2017 Nissan Armada – 5 Things You Need to Know

Nissan has unveiled the all-new 2017 Armada, designed for the adventurous family.

When the all-new, second generation Armada arrives in dealerships this summer it will complete Nissan’s transformation of its SUV and crossover lineup.

Taking its place as Nissan’s flagship, this new generation traces its heritage back to one of the brand’s most popular global vehicles – the Patrol.

“The Nissan Patrol nameplate goes back to 1951 and its reputation as a global workhorse is unparalleled – whether as a frequent support to the United Nations’ peace keeping efforts or as a three-time class winner of the Paris-Dakar Rally,” said Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “While the new Armada is intended primarily for family adventures here in North America, Armada owners will benefit from its underpinnings as a strong, durable and authentic full-size SUV with ruggedness to spare.”

Here are 5 things you should know about the 2017 Nissan Armada.

*****

Fresh Style, Rugged Build

Body-on-frame SUVs are hard to find these days, but like the first generation, the 2017 Armada still features the proven and strong construction. This allows it to provide a balance of strength, durability and utility, plus when it is properly equipped, can tow up to 8,500lbs.

The changes from the previous model means the Armada is now 1.2 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 2.2 inches lower in overall height. However, wheelbase is actually 2.1 inches shorter, and thanks to a 20% increase in body stiffness, handling and ride comfort has been improved.

Bold and refined, the Armada’s new exterior maintains a rugged image but with a contemporary style.

The front features an interpretation of Nissan’s current V-motion grille, and standard LED low-beam headlights with halogen high beams and LED daytime running lights.

Moving along the sides, the front fenders include functional air intake vents. The side mirrors have welcome lights that illuminate the ground in front of the doors when the key fob is detected.

At the back, LED taillights are standard, and the liftgate includes an auto-closure feature and available power function.

Comfortable Accommodations for Eight

The standard seating configuration in the new Armada is two front 4-way power-adjustable buckets, a fold flat 60/40 split second row bench seat, and a 60/40 split bench in the third row. The third row folds flat into the floor for extra flexibility.

If you only need 7-passenger seating capacity, second row Captain’s Chairs with removable console are available.

Adding more comfort for passengers, Nissan put an emphasis on making the interior as quiet as possible. As a result, the Armada uses acoustic glass on the windshield and front side windows, as well as expanded sound absorption materials throughout.

A Powerful, New Powertrain

Completely redesigned for 2017, the new Armada is powered by a 5.6-litre V8. While this is the same displacement as its predecessor, horsepower is up 73 to 390 and torque is up 16 to 401 lb-ft.

Nissan utilized several advanced technologies to achieve both improved performance and efficiency. Namely, direct injection, a new piston design to raise compression ratio, and variable valve timing.

Still not satisfied, Nissan gave the Armada a new advanced 7-speed automatic with Adaptive Shift Control and Downshift Rev Matching. This replaces the old 5-speed automatic and enhances fuel efficiency with wider gear ratios.

Continuing that effort is the available All-Mode 4-wheel drive system. Under normal driving conditions, the Armada operates in two-wheel drive, but if conditions warrant, torque can be distributed to all four wheels.

Cutting Edge Driving Aids

With its extensive suite of available advanced safety and security systems, the Armada seeks to stand apart from others in this segment.

Leading the charge is the new Predictive Forward Collision Warning that warns the driver of potential dangers down the road. This advanced radar system is able to sense the relative speed and distance of the two vehicles in front of the Armada. This works in conjunction with the available Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist, and Forward Emergency Braking to help the driver avoid an accident.

To watch the Armada’s wings, Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, and Blind Spot Intervention are available to the driver.

Keeping an eye on the rear is a rearview camera and the Around View Monitor. These help greatly when trying to park the mammoth Armada.

Plenty of Choice

Available in three trim levels, the 2017 Nissan Armada can also be ordered in 2WD or 4WD configuration. On top of that, there are four option packages that can be added.

The base Armada SV comes with a long list of standard features. Highlights include heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control that uses a second row “curtain” vent to effectively distribute air to every seat.

The range-topping Armada Platinum is very luxurious. It comes standard with features such as a power-sliding moonroof, climate controlled front seats, a Family Entertainment system, and Nissan Safety Shield technologies.
