2015 Oscar Nominees for Directing, Writing & More

We’ve covered the 2015 Academy Awards nominees for Best Picture and for the four acting awards.

Here are the nominees for Best Director, Cinematography, Writing, Foreign Language Film, Best Animated Feature Film, Music, Documentary, Costume Design, and Visual Effects.

Best Director:

The only director whose film was not nominated for Best Picture was Bennett Miller, for Foxcatcher.

The other nominees are Alejandro G. Iñàrritu for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance); Richard Linklater for Boyhood; Wes Anderson for The Grand Budapest Hotel; and Morten Tyldum for The Imitation Game.

Cinematography:

The nominees for Cinematography are Emmanuel Lubezki for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance); Robert Yeoman for The Grand Budapest Hotel; Lukasz Zal and Ryszard Lenczewski for Ida; Dick Pope for Mr. Turner; and Roger Deakins for Unbroken.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Jason Hall is nominated for his adaptation of American Sniper from the book by Chris Kyle and Scott McEwen.

Graham Moore is nominated for The Imitation Game, his adaptation of Andrew Hodges’ book Alan Turing: The Enigma.

Paul Thomas Anderson is being recognized for his adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Inherent Vice.

Anthony McCarten is nominated for The Theory of Everything, his adaptation of Jane Hawking’s autobiography Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.

Despite the fact that Damien Chazelle says he wrote the screenplay for Whiplash before he took a scene from it for the short film of the same name, the film was put in the Adapted Screenplay category, leading to much head-scratching in Hollywood.

Best Original Screenplay:

Four writers — Alejandro G. Iñàrritu, Nicolàs Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Armando Bo — are nominated  for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).

Richard Linklater was nominated for Boyhood. 

E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman received a nomination for Foxcatcher.

Wes Anderson wrote the screenplay for The Grand Budapest Hotel with help on the story from Hugo Guinness.

And Dan Gilroy is nominated for Nightcrawler.

Foreign Language Film:

The nominees for Best Foreign Language Film include: Ida, a film from Poland directed by Pawel Pawlikowski; Leviathan, from Russia, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev; Tangerines, from Estonia, directed by Zaza Urushadze; Timbuktu, from Mauritania, directed by Abderrahmane Sissako; and Wild Tales, from Argentina, directed by Damián Szifron.

Best Animated Feature Film:

The nominees for Best Animated film are: Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

Best Original Score:

The nominees for Best Original Score are: Alexandre Desplat for The Grand Budapest Hotel and for The Imitation Game; Hans Zimmer for Interstellar; Gary Yershon for Mr. Turner; and Jóhann Jóhannsson for The Theory of Everything.

Best Original Song:

Shawn Patterson was nominated for Best Original Song for “Everything Is Awesome” from The LEGO Movie.

John Stephens and Lonnie Lynn were nominated for “Glory” from Selma.

Diane Warren earned recognition for “Grateful” from Beyond the Lights.

Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond teamed up for their nomination for “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell … I’ll Be Me.

Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois were nominated for “Lost Stars” from Begin Again.

Best Documentary Feature:

The films nominated for Best Documentary Feature are: CitizenFour, Finding Vivian Maier, Last Days in Vietnam, The Salt of the Earth, and Virunga.

Costume Design:

The nominees for Best Costume Design are: Milena Canonero for The Grand Budapest Hotel; Mark Bridges for Inherent Vice; Colleen Atwood for Into the Woods; Anna B. Sheppard for Maleficent; and Jacqueline Durran for Mr. Turner.

Visual Effects:

The films nominated for Best Visual Effects are Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
