2015 Land Rover LR4 – 25 Years of Discovery

2015 Land Rover LR4 – 25 Years of Discovery

The Land Rover LR4 is the ultimate all-purpose vehicle.

The LR4 has sold over 1,100,000 units and won 219 international awards since its introduction in 1989. This illustrates the Land Rover’s tremendous capability and versatility.

Able to adapt to any circumstance, the LR4 is a true seven-seater with stadium seating and can carry a variety of cargo through several configurations.

Celebrating 25 years of the Discovery, Land Rover adds striking features to the LR4 with the XXV Special Edition anniversary model. These details bring a heightened level of interior luxury. The new features are now available across the range for customers to create the LR4 of their choice.

The XXV Special Edition Discovery is built on the already luxurious LR4 HSE. New interior treatments include distinctive leather combinations and wood veneer sets. Exterior enhancements consist of new 20-inch wheel styles and body colours.

Additions to the infotainment system further improve the experience. Land Rover InControl Apps compliment the existing system and brings the convenience, familiarity and original look and feel of compatible smartphone apps into the LR4.

Developed with some of the world’s leading app developers, InControl Apps offers services such as satellite-navigation, media streaming, internet radio and location services. Of course, it also provides easy access to the phone’s contacts, calendar and music library.

Many compatible apps already exist and the range is continually expanding, with new content becoming available every time the app updates.

With ever-tightening fuel economy standards, last year Land Rover replaced the LR4’s V8 with a supercharged 3.0-litre V6. Power is still respectable at 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, but efficiency has been improved from 20.1 mpg (14.1L/100km) to 24.6 mpg (11.5L/100km). Aiding that improvement is the new ZF eight-speed automatic and start/stop technology.

Already equipped with Land Rover’s rotary gear selector and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the LR4 is now available with Adaptive Cruise Control to allow the driver to maintain a consistent gap between them and the vehicle ahead.
2015 Land Rover LR4While features like cruise control, paddle shifters and tuned underpinnings create a more relaxed motorway experience, the LR4 is still the leader when it comes to overland driving. Land Rover offers the choice of a newer single-speed transfer box, or a twin-speed with high and low ranges to tackle the most demanding off-road conditions.

The LR4 still uses body-on-frame construction, but merely turning a dial can optimize the adjustable four-corner air suspension, allowing it cruise smoothly on the highway or crawl over large rocks. Hill Descent Control lets even novice off-road drivers to easily traverse the most challenging trails by holding a slow and steady speed down steep grades.

It needs to be noted, the LR4’s top-heavy design does lean in corners when taken at speed. However, it does have a comparatively tight turning circle, which is nice for navigating both trails and parking lots.

What do you think about the 2015 Land Rover LR4? Does it live up to the reputation earned over the past 25 years?
