2015 Corvette Z06 – The Most Powerful Ever From GM

2015 Corvette Z06 – The Most Powerful Ever From GM

The new Corvette Stingray was unveiled to much fanfare.

Those hoping for more supercar performance can rejoice, for the 2015 Corvette Z06 will be more than capable on the track with its 650 hp 6.2L V8.

The supercharged small block, known as the LT4, not only sets a new high watermark for Chevrolet, but the Corvette Z06 is among only a handful of production cars available with more than 600 horsepower.

To put that in perspective, the Porsche 911 Turbo S has a max horsepower rating of 560 hp.

Another hallmark of the new LT4 is its power delivery. The supercharged V8 produces an eye-watering amount of low-end torque. Chevrolet claims the Z06 produces 457 lb-ft just off idle and 625 lb-ft at only 2,800 rpm – max torque, 650 lb-ft, is reached at 3600 rpm.

Jordan Lee, chief engineer for Small Black engines, explains the benefits: “Torque is the pulling power of an engine and the LT4’s abundance of it at every rpm in the engine’s speed range helps the 2015 Corvette Z06 accelerate quicker and respond nearly instantaneously. It’s the very definition of power on demand.”

Making these feats even more impressive is the fact that the Z06’s LT4 engine is based on the same foundation as the Corvette Stingray’s LT1 6.2L naturally aspirated engine. This makes the LT4 one of the smallest and lightest 650 hp engines in the industry.

The 2015 Corvette Z06 will be available with either a standard seven-speed manual transmission or an all-new, paddle-shift eight-speed automatic.

This new supercar killer goes on sale later this year.

Let us know in the comments what you think of General Motors most powerful production car. What would you do with that much horsepower at your disposal?
