2015 Chevrolet Colorado – Back From The Dead

General Motors is seeking to revive the mid-size pickup truck segment with the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado.

Along with its GMC sibling, the 2015 Canyon, the Colorado doesn’t have many modern competitors. Ford no longer sells the Ranger and Dodge doesn’t have the Dakota anymore. Only Toyota and Nissan still offer a mid-size pickup with the Tacoma and Frontier – although, neither has received a major update in quite some time.

With the release of the 2015 Colorado and GMC Canyon, GM is now the only current manufacturer with 3 different truck sizes, covering mid-size, full-size and heavy duty. This gives customers more choices than they’ve had in nearly a decade.

At launch, the Colorado will be available with two different engines. The base is a 2.5-litre inline-four rated at 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. This motor is not expected to be the sales leader and its biggest draw is its fuel efficiency.

Most Colorado’s will come with the 3.6-litre V6 producing 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are based on proven designs but tuned for truck duty – namely to produce more torque at low rpm.

In its second year, the Colorado will become the only small truck available with a diesel. The Duramax 2.8-litre I-4 turbodiesel will expand the lineup to cover a broad range of needs.

All models come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, but the 2.5L is available with a six-speed manual on extended cab 2WD Work Truck models.

The Colorado can be equipped to be capable to tow 6,700 lbs. This is best in class and should be more than capable for the weekend warrior.

The cabin is similar to the current full-size pickups and therefore offers a refined experience. The Colorado boasts a touchscreen infotainment system, digital gauge cluster and GM’s new OnStar with available 4G LTE Wi-Fi.

How do you feel about the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado? Will it revive the mid-size pickup truck segment?
