As Round 1 continues today fans can look forward to some heavily anticipated matches on the men’s and women’s side. Here are the ones to watch:
Serena Williams -vs- Taylor Townsend: match is at 7 P.M (EST).
All eyes will be on this match as Williams, a 17 time Grand Slam Winner goes for number 18 after having a disappointing season so far.
Although she has won the last couple of tournaments this summer she has won none of the majors, but she is hoping to change that here.
The 18 year old Townsend, who Williams called the “future of tennis” could stun everyone with an upset, but my bet is Williams will take this in straight sets: 6-3,6-3.
The other matches to watch in the women’s group are Ana Ivanovic -vs- Alison Riske, 11 A.M. (EST) and Petra Kvitova -vs- Kristina Mladenovic ,1 P.M. (EST)
Marinko Matosevic -vs- Rodger Federer : match is at 9 P.M. (EST).
Federer, who is playing in his 60th Grand Slam tournament and is going for his 18 win here, has ben playing great tennis all year and is considered a favorite.
He has played Matosevic once before and beat him easily. It is hard to imagine this meeting going any differently, so I’m calling Federer in straight sets: 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
The American -versus American match of Marcos Giron -vs- John Inser is also worth catching
You can view the full day’s line-up on the US Open site.
Day 1’s winners were as follows:
For the women Maria Sharapova beat Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-0 and Halep defeated Collins 6-7, 6-1, 6-1,
For the men Novak Djokovic defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 Murray beat Haase 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 7-5 and Wawrinka defeated Vesely 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3).
